Ephemeral Synesthesia

An Interactive Design Art Installation

This is my favorite work that combines and highlights how I like to make art. Ephemeral Synesthesia is inspired by the condition in which sensory experiences get crossed for people. Sometimes this means they can see sound as colors. I wanted to replicate this experience for people who came to view this art.

I set up a 7ft canvas in a storage container converted into a gallery space. Using open-source software MAX/MSP and Jitter, I was able to associate different levels of
tones of the human voice categorized by Hz grouping.

Each tone level was represented by a color. I filmed videos of colored ink drops in water, and the different tones people projected into the microphone would trigger these videos of colored ink and would create a layered virtual painting on the canvas that would only last as long as the sound was creating it.
